On 10th December 2014 we were lucky enough to visit the Fletcher Fernie Food Photography studio and chat to Julie Fletcher regarding the tips and tricks she uses in her professional food photography work.
We were able to watch a demonstration by Julie using her equipment and then put the theory into practice by having a go ourselves. The images above are myself and the other students taking part in the practical side of the visit.
I found the demonstration by Julie to be very useful for my own food photography work. She only part-cooked the food she was photographing, such as the vegetables in a pasta dish, so that the food looked more fresh and vibrant as food, vegetables especially, dull during the cooking process. She also brushed oil onto the food to make it glisten when the image was taken and used reflectors to brighten different parts of the food as she was taking the photographs so we could see the effect on the final shot.
Julie cooks and styles the food herself as she has a lot of experience in this industry but many other photographers use a chef and food stylist to cut down their own time as the preparation will already be completed for them.
